BVDM Appointed Strategy Consultant for American Archives
Saturday, July 10th, 2010FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Broadway Video Digital Media Appointed CPB American Archive Strategy Consultant
New York, NY, July 10, 2010 – The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is developing an American Archive of public television and radio content. This new initiative will bring together vast quantities of the nation’s public media material in order to both: (1) preserve the content for future generations, and (2) make it available for a variety of different uses.
Currently, hundreds of thousands of hours of original interviews, unique local footage, and treasured national programming, dating back to the 1950s, sit in boxes and closets, completely inaccessible to the public that helped fund its creation. The American Archive will breathe new life into this rich legacy of programming, making cultural, news, and educational content from across the country available in exciting new ways. The initial goal is to have 40,000 hours of content digitized, described, preserved, and—potentially—searchable, and accessible by December 2011.
Broadway Video Digital Media (BVDM) has been awarded a contract by CPB to be the American Archive Strategy Consultant. BVDM’s assignment is to develop a plan for the technology infrastructure implementation that includes preservation of public media content, as well as a distribution strategy to make content accessible to the general public, producers, and educators in ways that best meet their needs.

BVDM 2009 PBS New Year’s Broadcast
Friday, January 2nd, 2009FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Broadway Video Digital Media Provides HDTV Services for Historic PBS/WNET New Year’s Day Broadcast
25th Annual Event Broadcasted Worldwide, Same-Day in High Definition
New York, NY, January 2, 2009 – When PBS/WNET sought a services partner for its broadcast of the prestigious Great Performances “From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2009,” they chose Broadway Video Digital Media, a vibrant player in the digital post-production field. The broadcast, which annually draws a larger worldwide audience than the Super Bowl, marked the 25th Anniversary of this delightful holiday tradition.
This year’s broadcast, which garnered an estimated audience of 1.2 Billion viewers, included three historic firsts. Julie Andrews, a legend of stage and screen, made her inaugural appearance as host for the program, which was broadcast in High Definition (HD) for the first time. The Vienna Philharmonic, under the conductor’s baton of Daniel Barenboim, another first, played selections that included familiar melodies from Austria’s Strauss family, including the Thunder and Lightening Polka, the Gypsy Baron Overture, and the famous Blue Danube Waltz.
BVDM, along with its sister company Broadway Video, provided a full range of services. These included: (1) receiving the HDTV live feed from Vienna, (2) editing the concert footage and other material to create the Great Performances show, (3) HD closed captioning of the broadcast in real-time, and (4) transmitting of the finished show to over 300 stations in the PBS Broadcast system.
Mark Yates, BVDM’s President, noted, “Broadway Video Digital Media was uniquely positioned to supply such a complex set of services, and we were thrilled to be working with the WNET Live Performances team on such a challenging and exciting event. BVDM is truly a one-stop digital services center that can provide custom solutions to the industry’s most complex challenges.”
“We worked closely with the PBS team to provide the exact technical configuration needed for this event, which included a highly sophisticated set of HDTV and closed captioning equipment. In addition, our “live to load” configuration saved valuable time preparing for the critical, same-day edit session that needed to take place,” said Dirk Van Dall, BVDM’s Vice President and General Manager.
“From Vienna; The New Year’s Celebration 2009″ aired locally on Thirteen/WNET on January 1, 2009 at 2:30 pm and 8:00 pm. Check your local listings for additional viewing times in your area.
